I was in town yesterday paying a few bills and as I was scootering along the Route de Casablanca I noticed off to my left a sort of shanty town.  

Eager to see all different ways of living here in Morocco I ventured down and happened upon this chap -’Abdul-Mansour’.  

I sat with him for 10 minutes and chatted.  He speaks a bit of French and was very proud to tell me that he had fought with the French in the late 50′s in the Algerian War.  

He seemed very content with himself and his thoughts and very happy to share them.  I would like to go back with an interpreter and talk to him more about his experiences and how/why he is living the way he is.

On my wanderings I have come across a couple of men like Abdul who are very proud and quick to tell me how they fought with the French against Algeria.  

I have been waiting/searching for a good documentary project to focus my photography on – perhaps this could be it?  They deserve (I think) to be remembered.

As I left he looked like he was wiping away a tear – or perhaps it was a fly, I don’t know.

I felt happy to have spent 10 minutes with this chap, who could well be one of Morocco’s many heroes.
